Nehemiah 7

Text: Nehemiah 7: 1-6
Message 7: The Book of Nehemiah – Chapter 7

Revision:
1.    Chapter 1: Nehemiah’s concern and prayer. Learn to pray rightly
2.    Chapter 2: Petition to the king; journey to Jerusalem; rally the people to build
3.    Chapter 3: Division of labour to do God’s work – orderly and properly organised
4.    Chapter 4: Opposition by mockery, conspiracy and discouragement
5.    Chapter 5: Internal strife and Nehemiah’s response and personal conduct
6.    Chapter 6: Opposition by compromise, slander & betrayal yet wall was completed

1. Book of Nehemiah

(a)  Chapter 1-6: Restoration of the walls
(b)  Chapter 8-13: Restoration of the people

2. Safeguarding Jerusalem (7:1-4)

(a) No complacency even when the walls were built (v.1)
(b) 3 appointments were made: Porters (Door keepers or Temple guards); Singers (choir in worship); Levites (serve in Temple). Nehemiah not one-man show.
(c)  Leader succession in place (v.2). Who were they? Who was mentioned in chp1:2?
            Note the 2 qualities: faithfulness & fear of God above men.
(d)  Security measures implemented (v.3-4): Why?
            Watch and pray!

3. Registry of the People (7:5-69)

(a)  Nehemiah did according to God’s will (v.5). David did not (2 Sam 24:1).
(b)  Genealogy reminds the people of their identity, land allocation & duty for Levites.
           God’s promised Saviour will be seen in the genealogy from the line of David.
(c) Certain people could not prove they were Israelites (v.61-65) – bar from being priests and eating holy things. Never be left out in the “Book of Life” (Rev 20:15).

4. Gifts given by the People (7:70-73)

(a)  Spontaneous, generous and sacrificial giving: “for God loveth a cheerful giver( 2 Cor 9:7b). What have you given up for Jesus Christ?

Nehemiah: Man of Concern; Man of Prayer; Man who waited upon God; Man of Action; Man of Planning; Man of Teamwork; Man of Courage; Man who fear God.

Memory Verse: Nehemiah 7:2b “for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.”
